Khajoor ki Kheer – Dates Payasam (No sugar)

I love kheer for its simplicity. This particular one only has natural sweetness.


  • 50gm Basmati Rice
  • 500ml full cream milk
  • 2tbsp ghee
  • 100 gms dates (if you like it to be sweeter add more)
  • Handful of chopped mixed dry fruits (raisins, almonds, pistachios)
  • Slivers of almond & pistachio, for garnish



Boil the dates with 1 cup water till is soft & can be easily pureed.

(Remove the seeds if not using seedless dates & puree the date using very little water)

Pick, wash & soak rice for 1 hour. After an hour, drain & keep it aside

In a deep pan, heat some ghee & add the rice.

Stir the rice for a minute or two & add the warm milk.

Lower the flame & add the roughly chopped nuts & raisins, let it simmer till the rice is cooked & the starch is released (approx. 35 mins.)

When it is almost cooked, add the date puree according to the desired level of sweetness.

Remove in serving bowls & garnish with slivers of almond & pistachio & enjoy a guilt free dessert.


Note – You may need more milk depending upon what consistency you are looking for.
